My8by10.com Discontinues Hosting of Actors' Headshots and Resumes as of January 1, 2005 |
The following notice was emailed to all members on November 15, 2004:
| Dear Members: It is with sadness that we announce that we will discontinue hosting of actors' headshots and resumes on My8by10.com, effective January 1, 2005. On that date, all member pages will be removed from the site, and all mail forwarders will be deactivated. We regret that we will not be able to accept any further change requests, other than contact info changes, effective immediately. Change requests already received will be completed by December 1st. We will honor requests to remove your page before January 1. For actors who have recently registered but have not had their page activated, we are sorry that we will be unable to create your page. In the four years since we started the site, we have seen it blossom from a site with just a handful of talented actors to a valuable resource for talent seekers, providing nearly 800 actors to choose from in New York and Los Angeles. For most of our existence, we have been able to at least break even through the assistance of a few faithful advertisers. Recently, however, due to increasing hosting, bandwidth and personnel costs, we have been operating at a substantial loss. Also, the time commitment required to maintain the site has become overwhelming, even with the help of dedicated volunteers throughout the years. We considered many alternatives before ultimately deciding as we did - from charging actors for hosting, to including advertising on the member pages, to flat-out begging members for donations. In the end, we felt any of these choices would violate our core belief of what the site should be, and has been for almost four years. We have committed ourselves to providing actors with a way to gain free exposure to further their careers. We have heard from so many of you telling us of your successes thanks - in some small part - to our site. We are proud that we have done even a little to help. It is now time for most of us here to move on. Some will be joining your ranks, pursuing a career on the stage or in front of the camera. Others will be moving on to other online projects. As for My8by10.com, the Casting Notice and Actors Bookshelf pages will remain active for the foreseeable future, hopefully through 2005 and beyond. We hope to have a site-wide redesign in place by February 1st, featuring several requested improvements to our Casting Notice page. We hope that you, our friends, will continue to keep in touch, and continue to inform us of your successes.
